Chichibu & Nagatoro: Chichibu Shrine, Mitsumine Shrine & Iwadatami

Chichibu is a mountain basin in western Saitama where Tokyo travelers come for old shrines, river scenery and one of Japan’s great festivals, all about 80 minutes from Ikebukuro on the Seibu Laview limited express. The town of Chichibu itself is home to Chichibu Shrine and the famous Chichibu Night Festival, the deep mountains to the west hide Mitsumine Shrine with its wolf guardians, and a short train ride north brings you to Nagatoro, where the Arakawa River runs past a long shelf of natural rock. This guide covers all three, with tips on passes, seasons and where to stay.

1. Chichibu Shrine & the Chichibu Night Festival

Chichibu Shrine, about a 15-minute walk from Seibu-Chichibu Station, is the spiritual center of the region, and its halls are covered in colorful carvings worth a slow look. On the east side is the “Chained Dragon,” on the south side a mother tiger with her cubs (one of which is actually a leopard), on the north side an owl that looks back over its shoulder, and on the west side a playful trio of monkeys that “hear, see and speak,” a cheerful twist on the famous Nikko monkeys. The dragon and tiger are traditionally attributed to the legendary carver Hidari Jingoro. The shrine is also home to the Chichibu Night Festival, held every December 2 and 3 with more than 300 years of history. On the evening of the 3rd, huge lantern-lit floats are hauled up the Dango-zaka slope while fireworks burst overhead in the winter sky. The festival is free, but the town is packed, so book a room early.

2. Mitsumine Shrine

Mitsumine Shrine sits high in the forested mountains of the Chichibu Tama Kai National Park, and the journey is part of the experience. Instead of the usual fox or lion-dog guardians, pairs of wolves stand watch here, a reminder of the old belief that wolves protected the mountains and the crops. The main gate and halls are richly painted and carved, and towering cedar trees and mountain mist give the grounds an atmosphere that feels far from Tokyo. The shrine grounds are free and open from about 6:30 to 17:00, and a small treasure hall (300 yen) is closed on Tuesdays and from December to March. Buses run from Seibu-Chichibu Station in about 75 minutes, or from Mitsumineguchi Station on the Chichibu Railway in about 55 minutes, and services are limited, so check the return times before you go. Bring a layer, since the mountain air is noticeably cooler than in town.

3. Nagatoro & Iwadatami

Nagatoro, about 25 minutes from Chichibu on the Chichibu Railway, is a small riverside town built around Iwadatami, a broad shelf of layered rock along the Arakawa River that looks like stacked tatami mats. The rock area is about a five-minute walk from Nagatoro Station, and the whole Nagatoro gorge is protected as a national place of scenic beauty and natural monument. Walk out onto the rocks for views of the river and the cliffs on the opposite bank, but watch your footing near the water. Nagatoro is also known for its traditional boat rides down the river, which normally run from March to early December; in fall 2026 the official operator listed all courses as suspended after river flooding, so check the Chichibu Railway website before you go. The Hodosan Ropeway nearby climbs a small mountain in about five minutes (1,200 yen round trip) for views over the valley, and in late January and February its wintersweet garden fills the air with fragrance.
