Shirahama, home to Shirarahama Beach, Engetsu Island and the Sandanbeki cliffs, is the best beach and hot spring resort within easy reach of Osaka. This town on the southwest coast of Wakayama Prefecture is one of Japan’s oldest hot spring areas, and it pairs a bright white-sand beach with dramatic volcanic rock formations, seaside open-air baths and fresh seafood. It is about two and a half hours from Shin-Osaka by limited express, which makes it an easy one or two-night escape from the big cities, and a convenient stop on the way to the Kumano Kodo. This guide covers the top sights, practical tips and where to stay.
1. Shirarahama Beach

Shirarahama is the beach that gave Shirahama, or white beach, its name. About 620 meters of dazzling white sand curves around a calm bay of turquoise water, with palm trees and hot spring hotels along the shore, and the sand is about 90 percent quartz, which gives it its brightness and fine texture. The official swimming season is one of the earliest on Honshu; in 2026 it ran from May 3 to September 13, with lifeguards on duty. Outside that period the beach is still lovely for a walk, a sunset or a soak in a hot spring bath nearby. The streets behind the beach have casual restaurants and souvenir shops. In summer the beach gets crowded on weekends and during the Obon holiday in mid-August, so go early in the morning or on a weekday. From JR Shirahama Station, local buses run to the beach, and many hotels are within walking distance of the sand.
2. Engetsu Island

Engetsu Island, officially called Takashima, is a small rocky islet just off the coast whose center has been eroded by waves into a natural arch, giving it its nickname, the full moon island. It is the symbol of Shirahama and one of the most photographed views in Wakayama. The island is best seen at sunset, when the sky behind it turns orange and red, and the view has been selected as one of Japan’s 100 best sunsets; around the spring and autumn equinoxes, the setting sun lines up with the hole through the rock. There is a viewing area along the coastal road, and it is an easy stop by bus or car on the way between Shirarahama and Sandanbeki. The walk along the nearby shoreline is very pleasant. Check the sunset time for the day and arrive at least 20 minutes early to find a good spot on busy evenings.
3. Sandanbeki Cliffs & Cave

Sandanbeki is a wall of sheer rock cliffs about 50 meters high that stretches roughly 2 km along the Pacific coast, where the waves crash into the rocks with tremendous force. From the clifftop viewpoint you can look straight down to the ocean, and on clear days the horizon seems to curve. An elevator descends 36 meters in about 24 seconds into the Sandanbeki Cave, a sea cave that, according to legend, the Kumano Suigun navy used to hide their boats during the Genpei War in the twelfth century. Walkways lead you right to the point where the waves surge into the cave. The cave is open daily from 8:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:50), and admission is 1,500 yen for adults and 750 yen for elementary school children. The viewpoint at the top is free. Nearby, Senjojiki is a broad, layered sandstone shelf sloping into the sea, another great spot for photos and sunset.

Quick Tips for Visiting
- Try Saki-no-yu, an ancient open-air bath on the rocks by the sea (500 yen); soap and shampoo are not allowed because the water flows into the ocean, and opening days can vary, so check before you go.
- Adventure World’s giant pandas returned to China in June 2025, so do not plan your trip around seeing them.
- Local Meiko buses connect JR Shirahama Station with the beach, Engetsu Island and Sandanbeki, so you can see the main sights without a car.
- Sandanbeki Cave can close in rough weather, so check conditions on stormy days.
- Pack a towel or buy one locally if you plan to use the public baths.
Getting there by train: JR Limited Express Kuroshio trains run from Shin-Osaka and Tennoji to Shirahama Station in about 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes. All seats are reserved, and the Japan Rail Pass is valid if you reserve a seat. Nanki-Shirahama Airport also has a few JAL flights a day from Tokyo Haneda, taking roughly 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes. Read our guide to riding trains in Japan, learn how to ride the Shinkansen to reach Shin-Osaka, and check whether the JR Pass is worth it.
