Kansai International Airport (KIX) sits on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, about 50 km from central Osaka and around 100 km from Kyoto. Two rail companies and a fleet of airport buses serve it, and which one you should take depends on where your hotel is. Here are the main options to Kyoto and Osaka, with current fares, travel times, and the visitor tickets that save money.
- KIX → Kyoto: JR Haruka, direct, about 1 hr 20 min. Foreign visitors pay ¥2,200 with the HARUKA One-way Ticket bought online.
- KIX → Namba, Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi: Nankai Rapi:t, from 34 min. The Rapi:t Digital Ticket costs ¥1,410.
- KIX → Umeda / Osaka Station: JR Haruka (¥1,800 with the visitor ticket) or the JR Kansai Airport Rapid Service, about ¥1,180, no transfer.
- Big bags, no stairs: Airport Limousine bus. Kyoto Station ¥2,800, Osaka Station ¥1,800, Namba ¥1,400.
- IC card: ICOCA is sold at the KIX JR station (cash only). Suica works here too.

Adult prices are ¥2,200 to Kyoto, ¥1,800 to Osaka or Shin-Osaka, and ¥1,300 to Tennoji (children half price). Have a rail pass? The Japan Rail Pass covers JR limited express trains such as the Haruka, and regional JR West passes like the Kansai Area Pass also include it (non-reserved seats). Check each pass’s current terms before you rely on it. Not sure a pass pays off? See is the JR Pass worth it.

Which Osaka option is best for you?
Nankai Rapi:t
The fastest way to the Minami area. Buy the Rapi:t Digital Ticket online for the lowest price, or the Kanku Toku-wari ticket at the station.
JR Haruka
Stops at Tennoji, Osaka and Shin-Osaka. Good if you are catching the Shinkansen or staying in Umeda.
Kansai Airport Rapid
Commuter-style seats, no reservation, and you can tap an IC card. Slower, and busy at rush hour.
Limousine bus
Staff load your bags and there are no station stairs. Allow extra time for traffic.

ICOCA, Suica and paying for trains
ICOCA is the Kansai region’s rechargeable IC card, the equivalent of Tokyo’s Suica. You can buy one from the ticket machines at the KIX JR station; it needs cash, and the price includes a ¥500 refundable deposit. ICOCA can also be added to Apple Wallet. If you already have a Suica (plastic or on your iPhone), keep it: Suica and ICOCA work in each other’s areas, so it pays for trains, subways and buses in Osaka and Kyoto too. See our Suica guide.
IC cards cover the base fare on the Nankai Airport Express and the JR Kansai Airport Rapid Service. The Haruka and Rapi:t also need a limited express ticket, so buy those tickets in advance or at the station. Nankai also accepts contactless credit cards at the gates of most of its stations.
Arrival checklist
- Buy the HARUKA One-way Ticket or Rapi:t Digital Ticket online before you fly, if you plan to use them.
- Bring cash yen for an ICOCA card, or check your Suica works.
- Have your passport ready to collect HARUKA tickets at the KIX ticket machines.
- Check the last train and bus times if you land late in the evening.
- Send big suitcases to your hotel from the delivery counters on the Terminal 1 arrivals floor; same-day delivery to your hotel is possible.
